About this item:

Shahi Jeera, also known as royal cumin, is a variety of cumin belonging to the Apiaceae family and Bunium genus. It is often used as a substitute for caraway seeds and is named "shahi" in Hindi, meaning royal. While having a similar taste to regular cumin (Cuminum Cyminum), shahi jeera offers a milder flavor profile. There are two types of shahi jeera - the black-colored Bunium Bulbo Castnum, which is longer and cultivated in Kashmir, and the Bunium Persicum, resembling regular jeera and offering a mild taste. It is worth noting that kala jeera is often mistaken for caraway seeds and kalonji seeds (Nigella Sativa).

What's the difference betewen Shahi jeera, Kala jeera, Caraway seeds and Kalonji seeds

Caraway seeds, belonging to the Carum Carvi species, offer a unique nutty flavor with hints of aniseed, dill, and mint. They differ significantly in taste from jeera, and it is surprising that even renowned chefs sometimes confuse the two. In case caraway seeds are not available, aniseeds can be used as a substitute.

Nigella, a flowering plant native to Western Asia and the Middle East, belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. These pungent seeds are used whole or in powdered form and are known as kalonji seeds in Hindi, karum jeerakam in Tamil, kala jeera or kalo jiro in Bengali. They are commonly used as an ingredient in Panch Phoran Masala, offering a distinct nutty taste.
